Amazon.com: The fourth and final volume of Batman: The Animated Series is a little uneven but still encompasses some great episodes. Start with "Over the Edge," a nightmarish scenario in which Commissioner Gordon dedicates himself to hunting down Batman following the death of his daughter, Batgirl. "Critters" is a tribute to Japanese monster movies, "Mad Love" recounts the origin of Harley Quinn, and "Legends of the Dark Knight" animates both a '50s-styled Batman adventure as well as a scene from Frank Miller's Return of the Dark Knight. This run of 24 episodes has a lot of Batgirl, too little Nightwing, and a lot of the new Robin, Tim Drake, whose origin is explained in "Sins of the Father." Drake gets a mostly solo adventure, Batgirl teams with Supergirl, and there's still a sense of fun, with goofy humor that includes an appearance by the Three Stooges as the Joker's henchmen. Guest voices include Sela Ward as Calendar Girl and Tippi Hedren, and Mark Hamill continues the excellent work as the Joker that created some early rumors about his taking the live-action role in the sequel to Batman Begins. By this time, Batman had become part of the Batman/Superman Hour, so viewers can choose the opening sequence for either that or the original animated series. That, as well as the unbalanced number of episodes in the seasons (e.g., the first season of the animated series was 60 episodes), is why Batman: The Animated Series was released in volumes rather than as single-season sets. --David Horiuchi Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - A Mixed Bag, but Still GoodWhen BTAS concluded is original run in 1995, it was the end of an era. The 85 episodes had reinvigorated Batman and provided a timeless portrayal of the Dark Knight and Gotham City. The production team moved onto new projects, most notably "Superman: The Animated Series". Then in 1997, the team got the pick-up to do 24 more episodes of Batman. Rather than repeat what they had done before, the animators chose to produce the show in the streamlined, revamped style that had been pioneered on "Superman". ... No riddler episodes was a big letdown as he was one of my favourites characters. The episodes also have this annoying red sky in the background all the time which is wierd. I don't know why they changed so much for this season but it wasn't for the good no wonder it got cancelled. Oh and the dvd extras were abysmall to say the least. Rating: - The box worth buyingI'm a huge Batman fan and when the Animated boxes started showing up here in Brazil, I went crazy and bought them all. But, weird enough Vol. 4 was only released here in 2009 (thanks to Warner Home Video Brazil, an example of how NOT to treat your audience). I've been watching the previous boxes slowly over the years (I'm currently on the last two DVDs from Vol. 3) and I always felt like: "Man, this show was waaaaaaaaaaaay better when I was a kid". A lot of the animation was way, way poor ... The tone set in episodes like "Over the Edge", "Old Wounds" and "Mad Love" set the stage for high points to come in the more adult-oriented work from the Dini/Timm team in Batman Beyond and Justice League, while "Legends of the Dark Knight" provides the ultimate in fan service. We're also treated to some fun episodes like "The Ultimate Thrill" and "Girl's Nite Out" and ...
